Glendale Serve Day and Movies by Moonlight
The 15th annual Glendale Serve Day was held this month and even with COVID-19 precautions in place, volunteers were able to make a large impact on families in need of nutrient rich food. This event provided volunteers with the opportunity to give back to their community, while collecting 3,225 pounds of citrus from trees at Sahuaro Ranch Park in a socially distanced way. Not only were volunteers spaced out to appropriate distances, they were also scheduled in shifts throughout the day to reduce the amount of volunteers at any one time. Citrus was donated to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance to distribute to those in need.
It's not just volunteer events that have changed to accommodate pandemic concerns. Take our "Movies by Moonlight” series, which has taken picnic blankets and lawn chairs and turned them into an opportunity for young people to experience the magic of the drive-in theater.
Though the Glendale Serve Day event has passed, we are able to provide some photos and video from previous years. If you would like to cover this story of adaptation to the relatively new world of socially distanced public service, please let me know! I’m happy to assist you in setting up interviews.
